The Society of Women Engineers has a strong focus on STEM Outreach. The Eastern North Carolina SWE Chapter carries out this mission by holding STEM Outreach events closer to home. Each year we hold the following:
-Be That Engineer Expo! Check our post on SWE's All Together Now blog!
-Great Women in Science and Engineering 5th Grade Essay Contest
The Eastern NC SWE Chapter also looks for opportunities to spread the word about SWENext at any local event. We also are happy to send some of our members to local career days or to give talks about life as an engineer.
Contact us if you are interested in helping or have an opportunity for us to get involved! We are also always looking for new members to volunteer!

Outreach/Volunteer Opportunities
Outreach Comittee
Are you interested in sharing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) with local youth? If so, consider joining ENC SWE's Outreach Committee! Contact us if you are interested. We are always looking for ideas for new volunteer opportunities to share with our members, so if you have any suggestions, please let us know!
Be That Engineer! EXPO
One of our biggest outreach activities each year, Be That Engineer! EXPO introduces middle school students to different types of engineering. We need many volunteers to make this wonderful event happen.
Great Women in Science and Engineering Essay Contest
Each year, the Eastern North Carolina SWE section holds the Great Women in Science and Engineering Essay Contest for fifth grade students. The contest seeks to highlight the contributions and achievements of women engineers and scientists, to encourage students to learn more about these women while polishing their researching and writing skills, and to improve the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in our quality of life.
Students are asked to describe the life and achievements of a woman scientist or engineer and to explain why her contributions were significant. The students can choose from a diverse group of engineers/scientists – from inventor Margaret E. Knight, to astronaut Ellen Ochoa, to biochemist Gertrude Belle Elion.
The contest is open to all fifth-grade students - public, charter, private, or home-schooled - in central and eastern North Carolina (see the Contest Invitation Letter below for eligibility by zip code). Essays are judged in two rounds by volunteers from the NC Eastern SWE section. Prizes and honorable mentions are awarded for the best essays. All students receive certificates of participation. The ten schools with the highest percentage of fifth grade participation each receive a reference book for the school's library.
